Anny lives in Batey Lechería in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lechería are Haitian.
Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Unless they have sufficient funds to start their own business, which most do not, they are passed over for work because of their nationality. Dominicans prefer to hire their own countrymen.
Anny lives with both parents and siblings, Yamile 11, Limeidi 8, and Alejandra 5. Her mother is a housekeeper and her father works as a farmer. Still. they make so little for their work they are not able to adequately provide for their children.
Anny attends public school and is currently in 5th grade. Her favorite subject is history. In addition to playing volleyball, Anny enjoys running. Her favorite color is pink. She wants to become a police officer in the future.
