Abdulai was born in 2009. His mother does not know the exact date of his birth so we celebrate his birthday on January 1st. Abdulai lives in the very poor fishing village of Tombo. Tombo is located on the western coastline of Sierra Leone and is a major hub for fish trade and transport. The town is known for its deeply religious Islamic faith. Because of the poor conditions and the bodies of water that surround Tombo, diseases such as Malaria, Typhoid and Cholera run rampant.
Abdulai lives with his mother who works for fish traders. She sells fish for the fish traders the they later pay her based on the quantity of fish she sells. Abdulai's father died when he was a much younger child. His mother does not earn much money working for the fish traders and she has four children to take care of. Abdulai does not recieve adequate food at home and his other basic needs are not being met either. Therefore, Abdulai works fetching water for people around the Tombo community and also helps sell charcoal in exchange for a small amount of food.
Abdulai has never been to school due to lack of funds to pay for school tuition, uniform, school supplies and other school fees. He would love to return to school if given the opportunity. Abdulai would like to become a teacher in the future.
