Hassan was born in 2010. His uncle does not know the exact date of his birth so we celebrate his birthday on January 1st. Hassan lives in the very poor fishing village of Tombo. Tombo is located on the western coastline of Sierra Leone and is a major hub for fish trade and transport. The town is known for its deeply religious Islamic faith. Because of the poor conditions and the bodies of water that surround Tombo, diseases such as Malaria, Typhoid and Cholera run rampant.
Hassan lives with his uncle who is a small scale businessman. His father died when he was a child and his mother is a prostitute in the interior of the country. Hassan is deeply sadden about not having a father or a mother and so he is often quiet and withdrawn. His uncle cannot adequately provide for Hassan, therefore, Hassan has found work selling wood for the woodcutters. His compensation of food or cash depends on how much he is able to sell for the day.
Hassan has never been to school due to the lack of funds to pay for school tuition, uniform, school supplies and other school fees. He would like to become an engineer in the future.
