Mohamed was born in 2010. His mother does not know the exact date of his birth so we celebrate his birthday on January 1st. Mohamed lives in the very poor fishing village of Tombo. Tombo is located on the western coastline of Sierra Leone and is a major hub for fish trade and transport. The town is known for its deeply religious Islamic faith. Because of the poor conditions and the bodies of water that surround Tombo, diseases such as Malaria, Typhoid and Cholera run rampant.
Mohamed lives with his mother who works as a fish trader. His father died when he was much younger. Mohamed has no memories of his father. Mohamed's mother cannot adequately provide food or other basic needs for her children. His mother often mistreats him due to accusations from Mohamed's stepfather. This is not an uncommon occurrence with children in Sierra Leone when stepparents are involved. Mohamed, therefore, sleeps on the streets at times. He begs people for food and also tries to make some money by helping people fetch water.
Mohamed has never been to school due to the lack of funds to pay for school tuition, uniform, school supplies and other school fees. He would love to go to school if given the opportunity. Mohamed would like to be an actor in the future.
