Abdulai was born in 2005. His mother does not know the exact date of his birth so we celebrate his birthday on January 1st. Abdulai lives in the very poor fishing village of Tombo. Tombo is located on the western coastline of Sierra Leone and is a major hub for fish trade and transport. The town is known for its deeply religious Islamic faith. Because of the poor conditions and the bodies of water that surround Tombo, diseases such as Malaria, Typhoid and Cholera run rampant.
Abdulai lives with his grandmother who is a fish trader. His mother is a prostitute and does not stay in one location. She is very transient. His father is much older now and is not able to walk. Abdulai's grandmother carries the responsibilities of many grandchildren along with Abdulai. She cannot provide sufficiently for them because her age limits and the amount of fish trading she can accomplish in one day. Realizing his grandmother cannot provide adequate food or meet his other basic needs, Abdulai has found work. He helps clear fish from the nets, transports and wash fish at the Pepper Wharf area on commercial basis.
Abdulai was forced to stop school in Junior Senior Secondary I due to lack of funds to pay for school tuition, uniform, school supplies and other school fees. He wishes to return to school if given the opportunity. Abdulai would like to become a gospel musician.
