Abdul lives in the very poor fishing village of Tombo. Tombo is located on the western coastline and is a major hub for fish trade and transport. The town is known for its deeply religious Islamic faith. Because of the poor conditions and the bodies of water that surround Tombo, diseases such as Malaria, Typhoid and Cholera run rampant.
Abdul lives with his parents. His father is a fisherman and his mother is currently unable to find work. Abdul helps his father at the Pepper Wharf catching, cleaning and selling fish for their livelihood.
When there is heavy wind, it becomes impossible for his father to get a catch so providing for his family becomes even more difficult. Abdul usually makes several visits to friends and neighbors to find food.
Abdul is currently in Class VI. Consistency in school will become very difficult because of the lack of funds to pay for tuition, uniforms, school supplies and other school fees.
