During the first day of the war on January 6, 1999, Omaru lost his mother when the rebels murdered her. Following his mother’s death, Omaru lived primarily with his aunt in the city of Bo. Because of a lack of money to pay for tuition and uniforms, he was unable to attend school for several years.
Margaret learned of Omaru and his aunt’s inability to care for his basic needs. As a result Margaret paid for the transportation for Omaru to live with her and begin schooling again in Grafton.
Omaru’s father became sick in 2009, and eventually he died that year. He had been admitted to the hospital, but doctors recommended he be transferred to a bigger hospital. Omaru’s father was extremely poor and due to his inability to pay for the transfer, he passed away.
Omaru is doing well living with Margaret and the other children and leads devotions for the children each morning.
Omaru is in Senior Secondary IV at the War Wounded Academy.
