Mauricio was born in 2009 and lives in Batey Lechería in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lechería are Haitian. Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Unless they have sufficient funds to start their own business, which most do not, they are passed over for work because of their nationality. Dominicans prefer to hire their own countrymen.
Mauricio lives with both parents in a very humble house. He has a younger brother, Enyer, who is two years old. Mauricio's dad works as a security guard to try to provide for the family. However, his income is simply not enough to adequately provide for the family.
Mauricio attends public school and is in 3rd grade. His favorite color is blue and he would like to become an engineer and a soccer player in the future.
