Laura was born in 2009 and lives in Batey Lechería in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lechería are Haitian. Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Unless they have sufficient funds to start their own business, which most do not, they are passed over for work because of their nationality. Dominicans prefer to hire their own countrymen.
Laura lives with her mother. Her father abandoned the family when she was much younger. Laura's mother cleans homes for a living. Her income is simply not enough to adequately provide for the family.
Laura attends public school and is in 4th grade. Her favorite color is pink and she would like to become a doctor in the future.
