Monserrat was born in 2009 and lives in Batey Lechería in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lechería are Haitian. Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Unless they have sufficient funds to start their own business, which most do not, they are passed over for work because of their nationality. Dominicans prefer to hire their own countrymen.
Monserrat lives with her mother and brother, Alejandro who is six years old. Her father abandoned the family a few years ago. Monserrat's mother cleans homes for a living. Her income is simply not enough to adequately provide for the family.
Monserrat attends public school and is in 3rd grade. Her favorite color is red and she would like to become a engineer in the future.
