Karen was born in 2012 and lives in Batey Lechería in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lechería are Haitian. Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Unless they have sufficient funds to start their own business, which most do not, they are passed over for work because of their nationality. Dominicans prefer to hire their own countrymen.
Karen lives with her mom. Her dad abandoned them when Karen was born. Karen is an only child. Her mom sells fruit for a living but she does not earn enough funds even to sustain just the two of them.
Karen attends public school and is in 1st grade. Karen's favorite color is purple and she would like to be a teacher in future.
