Mariano was born in 2004 and lives in Batey Lechería in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lechería are Haitian. Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Unless they have sufficient funds to start their own business, which most do not, they are passed over for work because of their nationality. Dominicans prefer to hire their own countrymen.
Mariano lives with both parents. His father been having trouble finding work lately and his mother cleans homes in the city for a living. Their income is simply not enough to sustain the family.
Mariano's favorite color is blue and he wants to become a professional baseball player in the future. He would also like to learn how to build homes.
