Jorge lives in Batey Lechería in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lechería are Haitian.
Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Unless they have sufficient funds to start their own business, which most do not, they are passed over for work because of their nationality. Dominicans prefer to hire their own countrymen.
Jorge lives with his mother. He has two siblings, Ariel, who is 11 and Luis, who is 15. His father abandoned the family a long time ago. His mother works in the public school as a concierge. However, her income is simply not enough to adequately provide for the family.
Jorge attends public school and is in 6th grade. His favorite color is blue and he would like to become an engineer in the future.
