Melania was born in 2009 and lives in Batey Lechería in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lechería are Haitian. Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Unless they have sufficient funds to start their own business, which most do not, they are passed over for work because of their nationality. Dominicans prefer to hire their own countrymen.
Melania lives with her mother and her siblings, Carlos who is 19, Jesus who is 6 years old. Her father abandoned the family. Her mother cleans homes in the city. The income generated from this work is simply not enough to properly sustain the family.
She attends public school and is in 3rd grade. Melania's favorite color is pink and she would like to be an engineer in the future.
