Ismael was born in 2008 and lives in Batey Lechería in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lechería are Haitian.
Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Unless they have sufficient funds to start their own business, which most do not, they are passed over for work because of their nationality. Dominicans prefer to hire their own countrymen.
Ismael lives with his mother and his five siblings. His siblings are Ana who is two, Leonardo who is four, Luis Miguel who is twelve, Luis Alberto who is fourteen and Marlenys who is eighteen. Ismael's father abandoned the family and does not provide any care for them. His mother works in a cherry plantation harvesting cherries and his older sister cleans homes. Their combined income is simply not enough to provide properly for the family.
Ismael attends public school and is in 3rd grade. His favorite color is red and he would like to become an engineer in the future.
