Yusleimi was born in 2009 and lives in Batey Lechería in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lechería are Haitian.
Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Unless they have sufficient funds to start their own business, which most do not, they are passed over for work because of their nationality. Dominicans prefer to hire their own countrymen.
Yusleimi lives with her mother and her three siblings. Her siblings are Yani who is 20, Victoria who is 18, Yesire who is 16. Yusleimi's father abandoned the family. Her older sisters and her mother all work cleaning homes for a living. The income they generate from this work is simply not enough to properly sustain the family.
Yusleimi attends public school and is in 3rd grade. Her favorite color is red and she would like to become a teacher in the future.
