Monica was born in 2007 and lives in Batey Lechería in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lechería are Haitian.
Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Unless they have sufficient funds to start their own business, which most do not, they are passed over for work because of their nationality. Dominicans prefer to hire their own countrymen.
Monica lives with her mother and siblings. Her siblings are Diana who is eight years old and Nelson who is twelve years old. Monica's father abandoned the family years ago. Her mother cleans houses for a living. The income she generates from this is simply not enough to sustain the family.
Monica attends public school and is in the 4th grade. Her favorite color is pink and she would like to become a doctor in the future.
