Patricia lives in Batey Lechería in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lechería are Haitian.
Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Unless they have sufficient funds to start their own business, which most do not, they are passed over for work because of their nationality. Dominicans prefer to hire their own countrymen.
Patricia lives with her mom and brother. Her mother sells food in the village where they live but she simply does not make enough to sustain the family. Patricia’s dad abandoned the family many years ago.
Patricia attends public high school and is in 12th grade. Her favorite subject is history and her favorite color is green. Patricia likes to play soccer. She would like to become a doctor in the future.
