Dawensi was born in 2011 and lives in Batey Lechería in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lechería are Haitian.
Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Unless they have sufficient funds to start their own business, which most do not, they are passed over for work because of their nationality. Dominicans prefer to hire their own countrymen.
Dawensi lives with both of his parents and siblings. His siblings are Daili who is four, Dahiana who is two and Betsaida who is six months old. His parents came from Haiti 20 years ago, but as with the majority of the Haitian's in the Dominican, they are still illegal immigrants. Dawensi's father works in a plastic recycling company near their village. He recently had an accident at work and his right hand was affected so he is currently in physical therapy. Dawensi's mother does not currently work since they have a baby. The family pays rent on a humble house made of wood.
Dawensi attends the public school and is in 1st grade. His favorite color is red. Dawensi would like to be an ambulance driver in the future.
