Adeline was born in 2010 and lives in Batey Lechería in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lechería are Haitian.
Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Unless they have sufficient funds to start their own business, which most do not, they are passed over for work because of their nationality. Dominicans prefer to hire their own countrymen.
Adeline lives with both of her parents. The family came to the Dominican from Haiti 14 years ago. As with the majority of Haitians in the Dominican, they are still in the country illegally. Adeline is the eldest of five children. Her siblings are Elismel who is five, Micheline who is three, Jeremi who is 18 months and David who is six months old. Adeline's dad works gathering stones and construction materials from the river near the village to try and sustain the family. They pay a monthly rent of $12 on a very humble home.
Adeline attends the public school and is in 2nd grade. Her favorite color is blue. In addition to playing with dolls, Adeline enjoys playing volleyball. Adeline would like to be a doctor in the future.
