Wilmer lives in Batey Lechería in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lechería are Haitian.
Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Unless they have sufficient funds to start their own business, which most do not, they are passed over for work because of their nationality. Dominicans prefer to hire their own countrymen.
Wilmer lives with his parents and two siblings. His brothers are Andi who is 20 years old and Carlos who is 16 years old. The family lives in a one room home that they rent.
His father works cleaning up construction sites when the work is available. Wilmer's mom cleans homes in the city to help provide for the basic needs of the family.
Currently, Wilmer attends the public school and is in 3rd grade. His favorite subject is mathematics. Wilmer speaks Spanish. In his free time, Wilmer enjoys playing soccer. He would like to become a teacher in the future.
