Yubelkis lives in Batey Lechería in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lechería are Haitian.
Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Unless they have sufficient funds to start their own business, which most do not, they are passed over for work because of their nationality. Dominicans prefer to hire their own countrymen.
Yubelkis lives with her parents and two siblings. Her siblings are Cindy who is two years old and Oben who is three years old. The family rents a one room home.
Her father works as a farmer to try to provide for the basic needs of her family, however, the wages for working in farming is very little. He also will occasionally find additional work cleaning up construction sites. To help sustain the family, her mother works in the cherry plantation when work is available.
Currently, Yubelkis attends the public school and is in 2nd grade. Her favorite subject is mathematics. Yubelkis speaks Spanish. In her free time, Yubelkis enjoys playing with dolls. She would like to become a doctor in the future.
