Rainel lives in Batey Lechería in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lechería are Haitian.
Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Unless they have sufficient funds to start their own business, which most do not, they are passed over for work because of their nationality. Dominicans prefer to hire their own countrymen.
Rainel lives with his mother, stepfather, aunt and his sister. His father abandoned the family when Rainel was only three years old. Rainel's father still lives in the village but he will not acknowledge or provide for his family.
His mother remarried and the family sells groceries to try to provide for the basic needs of the family.
Currently, Rainel attends the public school and is in 2nd grade. His favorite class is mathematics. Rainel speaks Spanish. In his free time, Rainel enjoys playing soccer. He would like to become an engineer in the future.
