Midelyne lives in Batey Lechería in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lechería are Haitian.
Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Unless they have sufficient funds to start their own business, which most do not, they are passed over for work because of their nationality. Dominicans prefer to hire their own countrymen.
Midelyne lives with her father, grandmother and two siblings. Her mother lives in Haiti and comes once per year to see her. Her father remarried and had her sister Esther age six and her brother Issac who is three years old.
Midelyne's father works in construction and her grandmother occasionally will sell groceries from their home. This income is simply not enough to sustain the family.
Currently, Midelyne is in the 4th grade and her favorite subject is mathematics. Midelyne speaks Spanish. In her free time, Midelyne enjoys running. She would like to become a policewoman in the future.
