Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Unless they have sufficient funds to start their own business, which most do not, they are passed over for work because of their nationality. Dominicans prefer to hire their own countrymen.
José's mother left her husband when José was only four months old due to physical abuse. His dad does not support the family in any way and remarried. José's father has never returned to see him.
He lives with his mother, stepfather and two younger siblings. José's siblings are Asbel age three and Adael who is one year old. The family sells groceries to sustain themselves.
José attends the public school that is two miles from his village. He is currently in 4th grade and his favorite subject is math. His favorite colors are red and blue. In his free time, José likes to play baseball. José wants to become an engineer in the future.
