Naika lives in Batey Lechería in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lechería are Haitian.
Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Unless they have sufficient funds to start their own business, which most do not, they are passed over for work because of their nationality. Dominicans prefer to hire their own countrymen.
Her father passed away five years ago when Naika was was six years old. Naika's mother lives in Haiti. She and her siblings live with their grandparents.
Naika's grandparents sell various items to provide as best as she can for the family. Naika's sister Josepfina is 17 years old and her sister Yubeli is seven.
Naika speaks Spanish and some Creole. She attends the public school that is two miles from her village. She is currently in 6th grade and her favorite subject is literature. In her free time, Naika enjoys singing and playing with dolls. She wants to become a singer in the future.
