Marlenys lives in Batey Lechería in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lechería are Haitian.
Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Unless they have sufficient funds to start their own business, which most do not, they are passed over for work because of their nationality. Dominicans prefer to hire their own countrymen.
Marlenys lives with her sister, she is the youngest of eight children. Marlenys' mother passed away in 2015. Her mother was electrocuted in her home while adjusting electrical wires. Marlenys' sister's husband works to provide for the whole family.
Marlenys speaks Spanish and some Creole. She attends the public school that is two miles from her village. She is currently in 3rd grade and her favorite subject is math. In her free time, Marlenys likes to play with a kitchen set. In the future she would like to become a doctor.
