Kendy lives in Batey Lechería in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lechería are Haitian.
Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Unless they have sufficient funds to start their own business, which most do not, they are passed over for work because of their nationality. Dominicans prefer to hire their own countrymen.
Kendy's mom abandoned the family. He and his three siblings live with their dad. His dad sells various items to provide as best as he can for the family.
Kendy speaks Spanish and some Creole. He attends the public school that is two miles from his village. He is currently in 5th grade and his favorite subject is literature. In his free time, Kendy likes to play soccer. He wants to become a soccer player in the future.
