Edwin lives in Batey Lechería in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lechería are Haitian.
Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Unless they have sufficient funds to start their own business, which most do not, they are passed over for work because of their nationality. Dominicans prefer to hire their own countrymen.
Edwin's dad abandoned the family. He is one of the youngest of three siblings. His mom works in the community public library to provide as best as she can for her family.
Edwin speaks Spanish and attends the public school that is two miles from his village. He is currently in 3rd grade and his favorite subject is math. In his free time Edwin likes to play soccer. He wants to become a soccer player in the future.
